Serving Up the Perfect Cuppa at the 3rd International Barista Championship for College StudentsLatest News
Organised by the MDIS School of Tourism and Hospitality and ZJTIE to promote the art and skills of Baristas, the competition was held at SAMTAS Hall, MDIS Campus on 16 November. The event served as a bridging platform between the three institutions, to provide students with comprehensive learning opportunities and strengthen a foothold in the hospitality industry.
The student competitors had their skills tested across three categories – Espresso; Cappuccino; and Signature Drink, and were evaluated on their beverage quality, technical skills, craftsmanship, presentation skills and service skills.
The MDIS team of Teoklit Premto from Albania, and Ryu Ji Hye from Korea, emerged victorious in the ‘Signature Drink’ category, winning with their cool creation - ‘Lady Marmalade’; an innovative blend of homemade Korean orange marmalade, vanilla ice cream, coconut juice and a shot of expresso.
MDIS student, Park Minjin from Korea placed third overall by impressing the judges with her confidence and expert knowledge, as well as final presentation and taste of her espresso and cappuccino brews.
“The opportunity for practical applications was what attracted me to MDIS. This is my first competition and I have not only gained in-depth knowledge but really useful skills which I can apply in my future work,” shared Minjin.
“At MDIS, we continually seek ways to engage our students in practical learning opportunities and this presented an excellent platform for our students to gain practical and relevant skills for the future. Such learning opportunities help them develop and master ever-changing skills to maximise their future readiness,” shared Dr R. Theyvendran, PBM, MDIS Secretary-General.
The competition concluded with the student competitors gaining industry experience and exposure, and developing creativity and skills. We look forward with keen anticipation to new and returning competitors for next year’s competition.
