School of Tourism and Hospitality’s Culinary Studio and MDIS Bakery Open Their DoorsLatest News
MDIS’ School of Tourism and Hospitality (STH) held an Open House on 21 January, introducing its brand new Culinary Studio and MDIS Bakery.
The event was a successful one with over 100 attendees. Visitors were treated to interactive sessions at the Culinary Studio and MDIS Bakery and prospective students were able to gain insights into the hospitality and tourism industry. There was also a Bartending competition where prizes worth a total of $600 w ere given out.
At the Culinary Studio, STH Trainer, Mr Reza Budi Sumali shared tips on creating the perfect pizza crust while participants got busy with making pizzas customized with their own selection of toppings.
At the MDIS Bakery, participants experienced being a pastry chef for the day by baking delectable Hokkaido cheese tarts. They learnt the fundamentals of baking and the secrets to creating silky, smooth cheese filling from invited guest Chef, Mr Tiong Hock Weh, Active Marketing Chef from Unox.
The Barista Workshop held at Tropical Breeze, MDIS’ on-campus Hospitality Training Centre, was a fun one for aspiring baristas and those who plan to start their own café. Conducted by Mr Teck Wee from Caffeine Pro Pte Ltd participants learnt the art of coffee preparation, milk frothing techniques and free-pour latte art creation. Mixologist, Mr Jaimaica Sunshine Alfonso from Australian Fruit Juice (S) Pte Ltd also conducted a demonstration on concocting a mock tail.
Prospective and current MDIS students looking to make their mark in the hospitality industry found the Career Sharing Session by Mr Jing Hui Leong of Centara Hotels and Resorts, especially enriching and insightful. STH Lecturers, Mr Terence Goh and Ms Marina Rahim also shared their experiences and provided career advice to the students.
STH offers programme specialisations in tourism, hospitality, and events management in partnership with the University of Sunderland, UK . The University of Sunderland is ranked Top 20 in The Guardian University Guide 2017: League Table for Hospitality, Event Management and Tourism.
A firm believer in grooming leading professionals of the future through practicum, MDIS invested in a hospitality training centre, Tropical Breeze to equip students with professional knowledge and industry skills. Students also gain practical skills through a 6-month internship programme at leading hotels, resorts, and attractions locally and overseas. This helps them gain real-world understanding of the complexities and demands of the hospitality sector.
