The number of new nurses in our country is 20% more than the year before, there are 1,400!

Statistics from the Ministry of Health show that as of the end of last year, there were 42,000 registered nurses in my country.  Among them, 1,400 nurses are new to the profession, 20% more than the year before. The resignation rate of nurses in public hospitals has also fallen from 6% the year before to 5% last year.

Cai Guofu, 53, worked as an emergency paramedic in the Civil Defence Force. He joined the ranks of nurses six years ago. The COVID-19 pandemic prompted him to re-plan his career. He studied for a Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) at the Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS) last year. He began to specialize in community nursing services six months ago. He will continue to study for a Master of Public Health this year.

Cai Guofu said: "Because of the epidemic, it is impossible to do things as usual. Some patients are isolated when they are in the community. I can use what I have learned to help them. I think it is a very meaningful thing."

MDIS stated that after the outbreak, the number of nurses enrolled in nursing and healthcare-related courses more than doubled.

Dr Tham Yieng Wei, Dean of MDIS, said: “We see more and more people in community care and elderly care, so they use this opportunity to improve their skills. After the epidemic, they can find a new way out."

Data from the Ministry of Education shows that the nursing enrollment rate of higher education institutions is generally stable in 2019 and 2020, with about 2,200 people successfully enrolling each year. The authorities stated that they will continue to cooperate with the Ministry of Health and higher education institutions to ensure that there are enough nursing students to meet future manpower needs in the healthcare sector.
