This Master's of Science course in Tourism and Hospitality is designed to give you a head start in the aforementioned sectors, which are part of one of the world’s largest industries. Our Tourism and Hospitality MSc brings together a rigorous social science approach with the development of skills that are needed by the likes of, for example, restaurant entrepreneurs, resort coordinators, and hotel managers.

We welcome graduates from any discipline to apply for a Master's degree in Science Tourism and Hospitality. You will study theoretical approaches through modules such as ‘Critical Tourism Theory and Methods’ and ‘International Tourism and Development’. There is a core module in ‘Hospitality Management Studies’ and an optional module with a focus on work-based learning. You will negotiate the final phase of the course with your tutors to reflect your personal interests and career aspirations.

An MBA gives you breadth of knowledge, while an MSc gives you the depth of knowledge. So really, the right question to ask is - do you want to be a generalist or a specialist in your field? If your goal is to be an expert or specialist in your field - complete an MSc. If your goal is to have a broad knowledge of the general approaches to management - pursue an MBA.

The Master of Science, Tourism and Hospitality programme is designed to facilitate a combination of real-world experience and critical reflection through fieldwork and classroom-based activities. This MDIS Masters of Science in Tourism and Hospitality programme applies a social scientific approach to both tourism and hospitality studies through a focus on the contexts of globalisation, commercialisation, and consumption.

A particular strength of this Master's degree programme is the consideration of the linkages between the travel, tourism, and hospitality industries in relation to organisation and management, as well as in providing satisfactory experiences to consumers.

This MSc course mixes taught academic elements with independent research. We use a wide variety of teaching and learning methods, which include lectures, seminars, study visits, and group work. These are supported by a range of guest speakers from diverse academic and industry backgrounds. Compared to an undergraduate course, you will find that this Master's course requires a higher level of independent working. Assessment methods include essays, exams, presentations, portfolios of evidence, and a dissertation. You can negotiate the topic of the Master of Science project to fit both your personal interests and the supervisory expertise of the University of Sunderland's tutors.

Modules on this course include:

• Tourism Concepts and Issues (20 credits)
• Research Methods for the Services Sector (30 Credits)
• Hospitality Management Studies (30 Credits)
• Current Practices in the Visitor Economy (30 Credits)
• Tourism and Hospitality Major Project (60 Credits)

According to a report from the Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI), graduates of the Master of Science Tourism and Hospitality programme earn an average of 27% more than individuals with an undergraduate degree.

Your Masters in Tourism and Hospitality will help you progress rapidly in the tourism and hospitality industry. Career prospects include opportunities in:

• Hotel and resort management
• Attractions and museums
• Destination marketing agencies
• Tourism companies
• Restaurant and bar management
• Catering management

Another option is to set up your own tourism or hospitality business, drawing on the entrepreneurial resources that are available through our Careers and Employability Service.
A Master's degree in Tourism will also open up opportunities in academic roles or pursue further study towards a PhD degree.
