Why University of Portsmouth

The University of Portsmouth prides itself on its excellent reputation for quality teaching and sustained, high levels of student satisfaction.

The University of Portsmouth is one of only four universities in the south east to receive the highest 'Gold' rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework – a Government scheme that recognises excellent teaching in UK universities.

The Gold-rating sees the University of Portsmouth ranked among the top 20% of the 299 universities, colleges and alternative providers that entered the Teaching Excellence Framework

The University of Portsmouth is in the top 25 of The Guardian’s University Guide 2019 and at subject level, the University is in the Top 10 for six subject areas including Social Work (3rd), Criminology (4th), Economics (9th), Biosciences (9th) and Health Professions (10th). Other notable areas where subjects are in the Top 20 include Sports Science (13th overall), Psychology (16th overall) and Accounting and Finance (18th overall). The Guardian’s league table ranks universities according to: spending per student; student/staff ratio; graduate career prospects; grades applicants need to get a place; a value-added score that compares students’ entry qualifications with their final degree results; and how satisfied final-year students are with their courses, based on results from the annual National Student Survey.

The University is ranked in the top 150 young universities in the world, in the Times Higher Education ranking of universities less than 50 years old.

The University has risen in The Complete University Guide, an independent ranking of excellence across 129 UK universities. It has climbed five places and is now ranked 51st in the UK, from 56th in 2018. This also means that the University of Portsmouth is now 8th in the south-east region. We're a top 30 UK university for teaching quality and student experience, according to The Times Good University Guide 2019.

More importantly the University was ranked as the number one university in the UK for boosting graduate salaries, according to The Economist. 2017 and 97.5% of our graduates are in work or further study six months after graduating, according to the Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) survey 2017.

The University is also ranked 36th this year in The Times Higher Education’s Student Experience Survey results for 2017, where students said the University offered inspiring experiences and activities across a range of areas including academic and societal experiences, facilities and industry connections.
