Programme Objectives

  • - Provide students with a foundation in the field of psychology
  • - Equip students with the necessary knowledge and skills to progress to the higher diploma level
  • - Introduce the basic communication skills in psychology, self and personality development and human conduct
  • - It touches on the basic elements of psychology thus making the students ready for a smooth progression to the next level of studies
  • - Equip participants with applied psychology skills and to prepare them to embark on a psychology degree programme
  • - Focus mainly in particular fields of applied psychology that includes organisational psychology, counselling, leadership and development, marketing and business psychology
     

Assessment Methods

Modules will be assessed through a combination of coursework and examinations depending on the individual module objectives.
 

Graduation 

Students who successfully complete the programme will be awarded with the International Foundation Diploma in Psychology awarded by MDIS.
 

Progression

Upon successful completion of this programme, students will progress to the Higher Diploma in Psychology.

Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS)

The Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS), founded in 1956, is Singapore's oldest not-for-profit professional institute for lifelong learning. MDIS has two subsidiaries: Management Development Institute of Singapore Pte Ltd (MDIS Pte Ltd) to oversee its Singapore academic operations, and MDIS International Pte Ltd to further its globalisation strategy.

 

Communication in Psychology

In this module, students will learn the foundation level of interpersonal communication designed for general education and introduced to fundamental concepts in psychology and behavioural science, as related to the practice of communication. 

Self and Personality Development

The module is designed to increase student’s success in school, at work and in personal life. It focuses on enabling students to achieve realistic view of themselves, set and pursue meaningful goals, and develop positive personal qualities such as self-esteem, a positive attitude, self-discipline, and self-motivation. The module will also help students adjust to transitions such as progressing from foundation diploma to the higher diploma level.

Motivation and Human Conduct

This module is a study of fundamental psychological principles, with special emphasis on understanding of self and others and the development of values, thoughts, emotions and behaviour. An Eastern perspective is emphasized throughout. This course surveys a variety of psychological perspectives, largely as an experimental scientist, investigating physiological, cognitive, developmental, social, and personality aspects of human behaviour.

Employee Assessment and Leadership Development

This module focused on the application of psychology to recruit and selection, and leadership development. Employee assessments, training and development methods, and leadership theories, styles and development are explored and discussed in this module.

Basic Counselling Skills

The module is designed as an introduction to interviewing with a focus on developing knowledge, attitudes and skills essential to effective counselling. Personal skills integration is covered and is simulated in practice sessions. It also provides students with the basic ethical practice necessary to safeguard counselling clients.

History of Psychology

This is a foundation level course designed to give general education and introduce fundamental knowledge in psychology and behavioural science as related to the history of Psychology.  We will explore history of psychology, its evolution and the significant theorists who have made an impact on psychology.

Psychology and Social Science Research

In this module students will learn the typical ways of ‘knowing’ as articulated by Charles Sanders Peirce, and to contrast those typical ways with the methods of science in general. They will learn how Thomas Kuhn conceived of the processes of science, the general ethics of research in the social sciences, and they will be exposed to a basic orientation of Western methods of science in general and the particular methods of research.

Applied Business Psychology

In this module students will learn the basics about psychological principles as applied to various aspects of business, including, but not limited to, organisational structure, leadership, motivating employees, and the international business climate from a psychological perspective.

Applied Marketing Psychology

In this module students learn the principles of psychology most applicable to marketing of products, services or intangibles, like image or self-promotion.
 

Graduation Project

The capstone of the International Foundation Diploma sequence is an extensive written report that reviews the literature on an organizational psychology, clinical or health related topic of the students’ choosing. The graduation project topic should be chosen in consultation with one or more of the student’s supervisors in the international foundation diploma programme.   Profile of lecturers and their respective teaching modules

Entry Requirements

Applicants must be of age 16 and above and meet at least one of the following requirements:

  • • Obtained at least a Grade C6 in any 2 GCE 'O' Level subjects; or
  • • Obtained at least a Grade E in GCE 'A' Level subject and at least a Grade C6 in 1 'AO' Level subject; or
  • • Nitec / Higher Nitec and above; or
  • • International applicants must have completed 10 years formal education.
     

Language Proficiency

Applicants must meet at least one of the following English Language requirements:

  • • At least a C6 pass for English (EL1) at GCE ‘O’ level or equivalent; or
  • • Achieve a minimum band of 5.5 in IELTS or equivalent; or
  • • Pass the English Entrance Test conducted by MDIS; or
  • • MDIS Professional Certificate in English
